  • Pre-sunrise light is just starting to illuminate the higher peaks. In March, when night time temperatures are in the 20's.  It took some gumption to crawl out of my tent early enough to get here for the sunrise.

  • On a fall camping weekend at Goosebery Falls State Park, late night rain, wet rocks, and departing clouds joined up to create this beautiful late September sunrise.

  • An early morning hike up to this viewpoint at Caribou Rock was rewarded with a very red sunrise. I have to add a disclaimer - The sky color is not 100% natural. I had to dial it back a bit. Otherwise, it would have looked fake.

  • This island near Covill just north of Grand Marais is sometimes linked to shore by a sand spit known as a tombolo. Located on a lakeshore segment of the Superior Hiking Trail, it is one of my favorite spots for an early morning visit.

  • After taking a long exposure in the near dark of early dawn, the mood changes quickly as the sun appears. This exposure is only 1.5 seconds. A few light clouds and a lot of moisture in the air made this moment of red sky possible. A few seconds later and it turned bight yellow.

  • Sunrise is overrated.  In the hour preceding sunrise, colors are more intense. This view includes the "stack" of standing rock with Shovel point behind it.

  • A tombolo is a sand spit that connects an island to land. This island on Lake Superior near Grand Marais, is sometimes connected by a tombolo, thus its popular name. I have been asked if the color of this intenxe sunrise is real. The answer is "almost.".  I had to tone it down a bit!  "Real" would have looked fake.

  • This small island stands just offshore near Grand Portage, MN. At this time of year, the rising sun shines through the "hollow".  This day's view included bonus sun dogs!  (Sun dogs may appear when the air temperature is below zero.)

  • A ledge of sharp rocks occupies the beach just below Split Rock Lighthouse. I feel this view makes a point about why the lighthouse was necessary.

  • Occasionally I revisit older pictures to see if my opinion has changed over time.  On this March morning the rocks of Stoney Point were coated in glare ice. I used a 5 minute exposure to reveal movement in the sky and soften the water. <br />
I imagined a view of primordial earth when I took the picture, but in color the feeling was lost.  Yesterday, I decided to convert it to monochrome.  With the color stripped away, I think it better expresses my imaginings of seeing a place as though nothing has lived there yet.

  • It is not uncommon for trees and shrubs to attempt life on the rocky shores of Lake Superior. More than once I have returned to a spot and found a previous year's tree that has lost the struggle. This one is an exception, so far.

  • Twice a year a full moon rises near the lighthouse, as seen from the Hwy 61 overlook.  Often, clouds or fog obscure the view. This year the moon managed to push through light clouds and put on a show.

  • Some mornings offer a spectacular sunrise. However, when the sun is blocked by a distant cloud bank, an interesting foreground can carry the photo. Fortunately, Artists Point on Lake Superior offers plenty of opportunity!

  • Just a short time after sunrise, the taller grasses in this field were illuminated, while the colorful, shorter sumac and other plants remained in the shade. The grasses are blurred by a slow shutter on this breezy morning, futher setting them apart.
