  • Stoney Point Drive is off Scenic Hwy 61 between Duluth and Two Harbors. This shack, once used by local commercial fishermen, is on private land. It has been carefully rebuilt and maintained by the couple across the road who live in a log home. They graciously allow free access for photographers and others who wish to view this piece of Lake Superior history.

  • Stoney Point juts into Lake Superior just south of Knife River. This rugged shore displays its volcanic history stripped bare by glacial flow from the last ice age. At the junction of warm land to the north and cold water to the south, atmospheric convection often generates interesting cloud formations.

  • Occasionally I revisit older pictures to see if my opinion has changed over time. On this March morning the rocks of Stoney Point were coated in glare ice. I used a 5 minute exposure to reveal movement in the sky and soften the water. <br />
I imagined a view of primordial earth when I took the picture, but in color the feeling was lost. Yesterday, I decided to convert it to monochrome. With the color stripped away, I think it better expresses my imaginings of seeing a place as though nothing has lived there yet.

  • After taking a long exposure in the near dark of early dawn, the mood changes quickly as the sun appears. This exposure is only 1.5 seconds. A few light clouds and a lot of moisture in the air made this moment of red sky possible. A few seconds later and it turned bight yellow.
    Sunrise at Stoney Point_IMG8163.JPG
  • Twice a year a full moon rises near the lighthouse, as seen from the Hwy 61 overlook. Often, clouds or fog obscure the view. This year the moon managed to push through light clouds and put on a show.

  • This is a popular location to photograph Lake Superior's dramatic rock formations. Having the gift of dramatic clouds showing up as if on cue is even better.
