  • For seven years the Red Bull Crashed Ice downhill skating races have been held in St. Paul. The backdrop for this extravaganza is the historic St. Paul Cathedral. The Crashed Ice crew augments the already beautiful church with a top notch light show.

  • A tombolo is a sand spit that connects an island to land. This island on Lake Superior near Grand Marais, is sometimes connected by a tombolo, thus its popular name. I have been asked if the color of this intenxe sunrise is real. The answer is "almost.". I had to tone it down a bit! "Real" would have looked fake.

  • A careful walk with ice spikes on my boots brought me to this scene. On a February visit to Artists Point, Grand Marais.

  • Every species of tree was covered in rime ice on this delightful morning. This photo is altered with an oil paint effect because I liked it this way!

  • This small island stands just offshore near Grand Portage, MN. At this time of year, the rising sun shines through the "hollow". This day's view included bonus sun dogs! (Sun dogs may appear when the air temperature is below zero.)

  • I have learned to never give up on a sunset until 20 minutes after the sun goes below the horizon. This is one reason why. When high clouds reach almost to the horizon, but not beyond it, the sun can reach up to illuminate those clouds from below. Colors are intense, but only for a few seconds. It is good to be ready! • Ice at Minnehaha can appear multi-colored. While the ice from the flow of Minnehaha Creek over the fall is more uniform. Ice that comes from seepage through the sandstone layers on either side of the fall can be colored by minerals and plant materials that stain the water. The result is a delightful array like this..

  • Just a short walk from my campsite is a granite shelf that was scraped clean at the end of the last ice age. This rugged shoreline stands in contrast to the ethereal lightness of a sky full of stars.

  • Downtown St. Paul gives off a beautiful glow. This view from Mounds Park is the only place where you can see the downtowns of St. Paul and Minneapolis in the same frame. And one of the rare occasions when Minneapolis takes a back seat to St. Paul! The First Bank "1" is ice blue this week to recognize the state high school hockey tournaments occurring in St. Paul.

  • Occasionally I revisit older pictures to see if my opinion has changed over time. On this March morning the rocks of Stoney Point were coated in glare ice. I used a 5 minute exposure to reveal movement in the sky and soften the water. <br />
I imagined a view of primordial earth when I took the picture, but in color the feeling was lost. Yesterday, I decided to convert it to monochrome. With the color stripped away, I think it better expresses my imaginings of seeing a place as though nothing has lived there yet.

  • Stoney Point juts into Lake Superior just south of Knife River. This rugged shore displays its volcanic history stripped bare by glacial flow from the last ice age. At the junction of warm land to the north and cold water to the south, atmospheric convection often generates interesting cloud formations.
