Sunset on Old Glass

The Chart House is one of the last surviving waterfront buildings constructed with ballast rock. In early America, sailing ships would arrive from England loaded with goods, and using rocks for ballast. They unloaded the ballast stones in order to carry more goods back to England. Buildings and streets were constructed using this discarded ballast.
