At Kellogg-Weaver Dunes SNA, Kellogg, MN. Near the confluence of the Mississippi, Zumbro, and Chippewa Rivers, sand terraces formed thousands of years ago. The deltas of the Zumbro and Chippewa slowed meltwaters enough to leave deposits up to 150 feet deep. Winds sculpted the sands into dunes, and over time a unique prairie community evolved. Today open sand blowouts, dry ridges and sheltered swales support plants and animals uniquely adapted to the hot dry environment of a sand prairie.
