In Memory of the Crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 10, the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior is commemorated at Split Rock Lighthouse. On this date in 1975 a November gale sank the 700 foot ore freighter. All twenty nine crew perished. Lighthouse staff read the names of the dead and ring a ship's bell in their honor. Descendants of this crew still come to the memorial to ring the bell, as their loved ones names are read aloud. It is a solemn reminder that Nature's power prevails but the dead are not forgotten. After the ceremony, the lighthouse beacon is lit at sunset. On this evening, a November gale was building as the ceremony progressed. By morning, the fury of Lake Superior was evident
