On November 10, the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior is commemorated at Split Rock Lighthouse. On this date in 1975 a November gale sank the 700 foot ore freighter. All twenty nine crew perished. Lighthouse staff read the names of the dead and ring a ship's bell in their honor. Descendants of this crew still come to the memorial to ring the bell, as their loved ones names are read aloud. It is a solemn reminder that Nature's power prevails but the dead are not forgotten.
