  • One of my teachers, Bryan Hansel gets credit for this one. I was in his workshop. He showed us how to keep searching until you find that magical place where it all comes together. If not for him, I would have walked by this.

  • The St. Louis River was running high due to heavy rains. Dam gates were opened to lower the reservoirs. I hiked the riverbanks looking for patterns of flow in this turbulent, boulder-strewn torrent. I used slow exposures to reveal patterns in the flow that are not easily visible in real time.

  • On a rainy day in late September. The falls are subdued this time of year. A slow rain adds richness to the rocks and roots. So unlike the wild and crazy spring scene at this location.

  • These popular falls are usually crowded with tourists. By arriving before sunrise, I enjoyed some solitude on this calm, early fall morning.

  • At Gooseberry Falls State Park, the grand Middle Falls get most of the attention. Just a short walk downstream, this intimate view is available for a close-up.
    Lower Falls, Gooseberry River_IMG979...JPG
  • At Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. Probably the best known, most visited hidden falls in the country. But when I am there I try to capture its mood of the hour anyway.

  • The St. Louis River was running high due to heavy rains. Gates at the Thomson Dam were opened to lower upstream reservoirs. I hiked the riverbanks looking for patterns of flow in this turbulent, boulder-strewn torrent. Slow exposures reveal patterns that are not easily visible in real time.

  • When walking around the falls before sunrise you can have the place to yourself. Gooseberry State Park, Two Harbors, MN

  • Gooseberry Falls is a most overphotographed feature. When I arrived shortly after sunrise on a quiet morning, this old, twisted Cedar caught my eye. I pay my respect to the trees. They cling to life in the background while tourists admire the waterfalls. This picture is for the trees!

  • A trail and stairway lead to this overlook in Tettegouche State Park. Unfortunately, a footbridge that crosses the river is closed due to flood damage.
