  • A common sight along small streams, their bright yellow is often visibile from a distance.

  • A flower that is uncommon in most of Minnesota. The flower head resembles Bloodroot.

  • This small clump of mushrooms is no more than a few inches across.  Multiple images at slightly different focus points were taken with a 50mm macro lens and processed in Helicon focus to yield a sharp view from front to back.

  • There is a floating bog in Big Bay Lagoon where these carnivorous Pitcher Plants thrive. A thick bed of sphagnum moss is all that stands between the surface and water below.

  • The Dwarf Trout Lily is rare and occurs in only three counties in the world, all of them in southern Minnesota.  This specimen was found in Nerstrand Big Woods State Park.

  • A spring visit to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park always yields an assortment of spring wildflowers. Being a couple of weeks later this year than last, I caught some flowers in the later stages of development.

  • Prairie Smoke displays these wispy plumes after it has gone to seed. Some flowers can be seen in the background. Early flowers nod down. After fertilization they point upward, then when seeds are mature, they open to reveal their delicate plumes.

  • Just a short time after sunrise, the taller grasses in this field were illuminated, while the colorful, shorter sumac and other plants remained in the shade. The grasses are blurred by a slow shutter on this breezy morning, futher setting them apart.

  • The berries will be bright red, and tart.  They make good jelly, and are a favorite late fall food for the birds.

  • Everything glows when sun shines on a sunflower. And there is at least one bumble bee on every flower head.

  • I used a 50mm macro lens to get closer than the eye will allow. The exquisite detail shows the hundreds of tiny flowers that will be pollinated by bees and eventually produce seeds.

  • If you hold your camera in just the right position, you can get a sunbeam diffraction star as it passes through a pinhole sized opening between petals.

  • Bloodroot are as common as dirt, but they only last for a day after they fully open. It is fun to catch a nicely arranged group like this.

  • This unusual Hepatica is a bicolor mix. They come in several colors, most often blue or white. This clump has a mixture of color, plus more sepals. - 8 and  9, instead of the usual 6.  They were a real eye-catcher.. At Sakatah Lake State Park.

  • Dutchmans Breeches in the wild are small. These are no more than 1/3 inch wide. I don't see many pink ones. Most are white.  At Sakatah Lake State Park.

  • Growing on the basalt at Gooseberry Falls State Park. These little gems don't look like much until you get up close.

  • This group of tiny mushrooms is less than two inches wide. A 100mm macro lens brings exquisite detail into view.

  • On the floating bog, among the pitcher plants, are these tiny, carnivorous sundews. Only a couple inches across, droplets on their tiny flowers entice insects to become entangled and devoured.

  • These delicate flowers are no more than a quarter inch long. They quiver at the slightest movement of air. At Carley State Park.

  • Only the False Rue Anemones have flowers today. Over the course of a season, every plant here will produce its flower in turn.  At Carely State Park.

  • Newly opened flowers are often pink, turning blue as they mature.  At Carley State Park.
